The client

TLT is a UK law firm established in 2000 with the aim of finding different ways to work and think. The firm has grown rapidly and supports major institutions, high-growth businesses and well-known brands. Its legal services span advisory work, disputes and transactions, making dependable access to technology essential to client service across the business.

The challenge

TLT recognised the importance of keeping the systems that underpin its client services up to date and compliant. The firm decided to upgrade every PC and laptop to Windows 10, creating a substantial programme across more than 1,300 devices located in several UK cities.

The operating-system change was only one part of the challenge. Much of the hardware and many of TLT’s software applications also needed upgrading to support the new environment. The project therefore required careful coordination across devices, applications, offices and users, with a large number of technical issues to identify and close before rollout could be completed.

The solution

TLT brought in Virtual Engine’s End User Computing and cloud specialists to support the programme. The project used Virtual Engine’s Windows 10 Automated Upgrade Service, a proven model designed to automate much of the Windows build process and make deployment more consistent at scale.
TLT’s in-house IT team worked closely with Virtual Engine’s consultants and engineers to plan, build and test the new Windows environment. The teams coordinated the replacement and upgrade of desktops, laptops, screens, memory and storage, as well as resolving issues identified through testing. The final build was deployed successfully to every office by December 2019.

The result

Together, TLT and Virtual Engine upgraded 1,350 devices in ten weeks across six sites. The programme included 500 new desktops, 180 laptops, 780 screens and more than 300 RAM and SSD upgrades. The teams also closed 342 issues raised during testing.

The project was delivered on time and on budget. Following the successful rollout, TLT moved into a continuous service arrangement with Virtual Engine to manage the ongoing Windows 10 Evergreen requirement, turning a one-off transformation into a maintained and repeatable endpoint service.

Hear from both TLT and Virtual Engine on the project, the partnership, and the impact of the new virtual desktop solution.

“This is a significant achievement that we want to recognise. Collectively we’ve upgraded 1350 devices in 10 weeks across 6 sites, including 500 new desktops, 180 laptops, 780 screens and over 300 RAM and SSD upgrades, closing out 342 issues raised through testing.

Virtual Engine has done a great job, delivering the project on time and on budget. We’re now moving into a continuous service arrangement to manage the ongoing Windows 10 Evergreen.”
