The client

Burges Salmon is an independent UK law firm with a strong focus on innovation. The firm combines legal and sector expertise with investment in the technologies and working practices that add meaningful value for clients and staff. As part of that approach, Burges Salmon continues to improve its Digital Employee Experience so its people can work effectively and deliver the standard of service its clients expect.

The challenge

Burges Salmon wanted to use new technologies to deliver key applications and data securely while supporting hybrid working across the firm. Its IT team needed a dependable way to manage the Microsoft Windows and application lifecycle for more than 1,000 devices.
The brief was broader than simply producing a new device image. Burges Salmon wanted to reduce the time needed to deploy each device, improve the lifecycle management of line-of-business applications and services, and create a build process the business could rely on with confidence. The solution also needed to keep users informed and reduce the operational burden on the internal IT team.

The solution

Virtual Engine began with a consultancy phase to understand the existing environment and define the right approach. Its specialists assessed the requirements, planned the service, built the new device images and carried out detailed testing before seeking sign-off.

Once the design had been approved, full-scale deployment began. Virtual Engine then moved into a complete managed service for Windows and application delivery. Acting as an extension of Burges Salmon’s team, Virtual Engine took responsibility for maintaining a repeatable build and delivery process while supporting the ongoing application lifecycle.

The result

Burges Salmon now has a reliable Windows build process with an average device build time of 40 minutes. Applications can be delivered faster through a consistent managed process, while users remain better informed throughout delivery.

The service has also improved the wider digital experience across the firm. By moving the operational Windows and application-delivery workload into a specialist managed service, Burges Salmon’s IT team has been able to redirect more time towards higher-value projects while retaining confidence in timely access to the applications the business needs.

Hear from both Burges Salmon and Virtual Engine on the project, the partnership, and the impact of the new virtual desktop solution.

“Virtual Engine brought its technical expertise and experience to transform our Windows build process. We are confident that the managed service will continue to deliver a seamless process that gives our IT team and the business assurance of timely access to applications and deliver the service our clients have come to expect.”
